The Finnish Chess Problem Society was founded in 1935 and thus it was appropriate
to celebrate society´s 75th anniversary. The anniversary party took place
on 4th of December in Helsinki. The program was a successful combination of
enjoyable music, good food, short or not so short speeches and friendly atmosphere.
The feedback that we have received has been very positive perhaps this
was due to the fact that only two chess problems were shown during the whole
evening!
An important part of the program was the celebration of the late Matti Myllyniemi.
As mentioned in the previous ST issue, a 2# by Myllyniemi and Milan Velimirovic
was selected to the FIDE album 20042006. Thus the FIDE album points of
Myllyniemi rose to 70,37, meaning a GM title. In addition, also Milan achieved
the GM title: warm thanks and congratulations to him!
At the party, the daughter and son of Matti Myllyniemi received the GM certificate
and were happy to hear several reminescents of their father. In this magazine
Kauko Virtanen, Henry Tanner and Kari Valtonen pay a tribute to Myllyniemi.
The Crete congress was a very pleasant experience. Great location and Mediterranean
climate made it a memorable experience. The congress program was loyal to traditional
values: composing, solving, meeting old friends and making new ones. The Finnish
success in competitions was moderate, which may or may not reflect our skills...
In this magazine, Janne Syväniemi writes of his first congress ever and
our experienced solver and composer Harri Hurme pays attention to composing
and solving competitions, see pp. 152158. On the next page we inform on
future events, both national and international ones. Neal Turner´s Paha
Pähkinä, A Tough Nut to Crack, waits for unwary solvers on the same
page. Good luck!
The problems, solutions and results of solving competitions in Crete are on
pp. 160167.
The award of 3# ST 19981999 is on pp. 168170. The judge had forgotten
about his task, but was luckily able to complete the award.
The autumn meeting of ST took place in the end of November and consisted of
solving, composing and lectures. See pp. 170171 for details. On p. 171
we publish the announcement of Joose Norri 40 JT. Please, participate or reprint!
A cook has demolished the proofgame by Unto Heinonen, which won the WJP in 1991.
see p. 172, where also the top FIDE album point scores are listed, for all composers
and for the most successful Finns.
The originals columns start from p. 173 and offer the traditional menu: orthodox
problems, studies, fairies. Send your efforts to our original problems editors,
contact information in respective columns.
The next ST is due to appear not earlier than February. Happy New Year 2011!
